Unfortunately, drugs and alcohol are waging war within the culture and even within the church. An addict can be found living on almost every block, within almost every family, and even within almost every home. Drugs are taking their toll on the world as we know it. As the problem continues to grow, convictions concerning the matter begin to dwindle. More and more drug and alcohol abuse becomes acceptable as even the government shifts from banning substances to allowing them to be used by the masses.
Gaining a proper biblical perspective on the matter is vitally important for the Christian. Oftentimes the addict may say something like, The Bible does not speak about marijuana therefore, it must be okay to use, or, The Bible only talks about alcohol not the substances that I am using, or, God made mushrooms, the marijuana plant, the cocaine plant, and even the opioid plant therefore, I should be able to use them. At this point, the Christian is often dumbfounded and does not know what to say.
As a result, the Christian admits defeat, and the addict goes on his way thinking that he is right or at least that he has won that battle. Sadly to say, oftentimes the Christian does not have a response for the hope that is in him. The Christian oftentimes does not know what to say concerning many attacks that are made against Gods Word and His heart. So what is a true biblical view on the topic of drugs and alcohol?

Power In Your Corner Your Sufficiency Is In Christ
Let first look at what Ephesians 1:17-19 says, That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him: The eyes of your understanding being enlightened that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints, And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power.
What does all of the above mean to you? Well, for a start, you should get down on your knees before the Father, the mighty God who parcels out all heaven and earth. Ask him to strengthen you by his Spiritnot physical strength, but his boundless, glorious, inner strength that was made possible through the finished work of Christ. Ask him to shower you with his love, to embrace you, and to manifest himself to you so that your feet can be rooted and planted firmly in his love.
God can do anythingfar more than you could ever imagine or guess or request in your wildest dreams! He does it not by pushing us around but by working within us by his spirit.
Moreover, if you are now coming into a life of faith, it may sound spiritual to say that youre going to trust God to overcome all your addiction problems, doesnt it? But may I remind you that Matthew 11:28-30 talks about giving all your burdens to Jesus, and in other places in the Bible, God is always saying not to worry or be afraid.

A dear friend of mine, a recovering alcoholic, once told me, Were all in recovery. In other words, every soul on earth is recovering from something. If not addiction, then illness. If not illness, then job loss. If not job loss, then grief. And on and on it goes.
If thats true , then each of us can use a little help praying through recovery. Whatever our need, the strength and stamina to recover comes from God, through prayer. So here are 12 scriptures to help you:
1) Numbers 6:24-26 The Lord bless you and keep you may the Lord cause his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you may the Lord lift up his countenance toward you and give you peace.
2) Psalm 3:3 But you, O Lord, are a shield around me you are my glory, the one who holds my head high.
3) Psalm 18:28 You, O Lord, light my lamp burning my God lights up my darkness.

Paul explained in 1 Corinthians 9 that even though he was allowed to eat and drink anything he wanted, he was very careful not to do things that would hinder the gospel of Christ. Drug abuse has been written about in many languages and by many people over the centuries. Many of these works are very useful in treatment for addiction, but few have the same impact as the Bible. What does the Bible actually say about addiction or substance abuse? If you read through it looking for that word, you may be disappointed. Thats because the terms addict and addiction werent used during the time the Bible was written. However, just because addiction isnt directly mentioned in many versions of the Bible doesnt mean drug rehab centers cant use scripture to help addicts. Quite the opposite. If you know where to look, youll find that the Bible actually says a lot about substance abuse.
Jesus & The New Testament
Finally, Jesus Christ drinks alcohol at multiple points in the New Testament.
Notably, John 2:1-11 describes how he turned water into wine at a wedding. Since Jesus is the central figure of Christianity, many people interpret these scriptures as evidence that Christians are allowed to drink in moderation.

Christ Came To Set Us Free From Sins Control
Galatians 5:1 says that Jesus Christ set us free, and therefore, we should not get tied up again in slavery to sin. John 8:36 also says that the Son of God sets us free, and so we are free indeed.
Romans 6:67We know that our old sinful selves were crucified with Christ so that sin might lose its power in our lives. We are no longer slaves to sin. For when we died with Christ we were set free from the power of sin.

Romans 6:1819Now you are free from your slavery to sin, and you have become slaves to righteous living. Because of the weakness of your human nature, I am using the illustration of slavery to help you understand all this. Previously, you let yourselves be slaves to impurity and lawlessness, which led ever deeper into sin. Now you must give yourselves to be slaves to righteous living so that you will become holy.

1 Corinthians 10:13 – No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.
2 Corinthians 12:9 – But he said to me, My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness. Therefore, I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christs power may rest on me.
Galatians 5:1 – It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.

God helps us heal our addictions and prevent them in the first place by giving us a guide for life.
