Bible Verses For Recovery

5 Bible Verses to Help Someone in Addiction Recovery

1. So dont worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries. Todays trouble is enough for today. Matthew 6:34, NLT

This verse reminds us to live in the present. As you work toward sobriety, its easy to get caught up in worrying about the future. However, its essential to focus on today. There will be days when youre tempted to relapse. Its easier to stay strong and sober if youre focused on the present.

2. And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them. Romans 8:28, NLT

This verse gives us hope that, even in difficult times, God is working for our good. As you work on recovery, youll encounter challenges and roadblocks. This verse is a reminder that even though you may not see it, God is working behind the scenes to help you reach your goals.

3. When anyone among you has troubles, you must help each other. If you do that, you will be obeying Christs rule. Galatians 6:2, NLT

On your road to recovery, there will be times when you need help and times when you can offer support to others. This verse encourages you to take advantage of both opportunities, as helping others is essential to achieving and maintaining sobriety.

4. Instead, be kind and merciful, and forgive others, just as God forgave you because of Christ. Ephesians 4:32, NLT

5. Even if my father and mother should desert me, You will take care of me. Psalm 27:10, NLT

Be blessed, friends!

Life is often filled with challenges and temptations. Everyone has a particular hang-up, habits, and hurts that torment our lives and can lead people to engage in practices that help to numb the pain.

Whether the addition is to sex, drugs or alcohol, the word of God offers a safe place to break free.

Its through the forgiving heart and words of God that people find the strength and encouragement to overcome these cravings.

These Bible verses will help you to overcome the power of addiction and embrace your life with the spirit and faith of God.

What Does The Bible Say About Drugs And Alcohol

Unfortunately, drugs and alcohol are waging war within the culture and even within the church. An addict can be found living on almost every block, within almost every family, and even within almost every home. Drugs are taking their toll on the world as we know it. As the problem continues to grow, convictions concerning the matter begin to dwindle. More and more drug and alcohol abuse becomes acceptable as even the government shifts from banning substances to allowing them to be used by the masses.

Gaining a proper biblical perspective on the matter is vitally important for the Christian. Oftentimes the addict may say something like, The Bible does not speak about marijuana therefore, it must be okay to use, or, The Bible only talks about alcohol not the substances that I am using, or, God made mushrooms, the marijuana plant, the cocaine plant, and even the opioid plant therefore, I should be able to use them. At this point, the Christian is often dumbfounded and does not know what to say.

As a result, the Christian admits defeat, and the addict goes on his way thinking that he is right or at least that he has won that battle. Sadly to say, oftentimes the Christian does not have a response for the hope that is in him. The Christian oftentimes does not know what to say concerning many attacks that are made against Gods Word and His heart. So what is a true biblical view on the topic of drugs and alcohol?

Power In Your Corner Your Sufficiency Is In Christ

Let first look at what Ephesians 1:17-19 says, That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him: The eyes of your understanding being enlightened that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints, And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power.

What does all of the above mean to you? Well, for a start, you should get down on your knees before the Father, the mighty God who parcels out all heaven and earth. Ask him to strengthen you by his Spiritnot physical strength, but his boundless, glorious, inner strength that was made possible through the finished work of Christ. Ask him to shower you with his love, to embrace you, and to manifest himself to you so that your feet can be rooted and planted firmly in his love.

God can do anythingfar more than you could ever imagine or guess or request in your wildest dreams! He does it not by pushing us around but by working within us by his spirit.

Moreover, if you are now coming into a life of faith, it may sound spiritual to say that youre going to trust God to overcome all your addiction problems, doesnt it? But may I remind you that Matthew 11:28-30 talks about giving all your burdens to Jesus, and in other places in the Bible, God is always saying not to worry or be afraid.

The Bible Forbids Drinking If It Hinders The Gospel

What are some Bible scriptures to help break an addiction? – Live Ask the Pastor!

Paul explained in 1 Corinthians 9 that even though he was allowed to eat and drink anything he wanted, he was very careful not to do things that would hinder the gospel of Christ. He said, Though I am free and belong to no man, I make myself a slave to everyone, to win as many a possible. I became all things to all men so that by all possible means I might save some. I do all this for the sake of the gospel, that I may share in its blessings. If I was trying to witness to someone who thought it was bad for Christians to drink, theres no way I would drink alcohol in front of that person!

Christ Came To Set Us Free From Sins Control

Galatians 5:1 says that Jesus Christ set us free, and therefore, we should not get tied up again in slavery to sin. John 8:36 also says that the Son of God sets us free, and so we are free indeed.

Romans 6:67We know that our old sinful selves were crucified with Christ so that sin might lose its power in our lives. We are no longer slaves to sin. For when we died with Christ we were set free from the power of sin.

Romans 6:11So you also should consider yourselves to be dead to the power of sin and alive to God through Christ Jesus.

Romans 6:12-13Do not let sin control the way you live do not give in to sinful desires. Do not let any part of your body become an instrument of evil to serve sin. Instead, give yourselves completely to God, for you were dead, but now you have new life. So use your whole body as an instrument to do what is right for the glory of God.

Romans 6:14Sin is no longer your master, for you no longer live under the requirements of the law. Instead, you live under the freedom of Gods grace.

Romans 6:1819Now you are free from your slavery to sin, and you have become slaves to righteous living. Because of the weakness of your human nature, I am using the illustration of slavery to help you understand all this. Previously, you let yourselves be slaves to impurity and lawlessness, which led ever deeper into sin. Now you must give yourselves to be slaves to righteous living so that you will become holy.

How Does God Help Us Avoid Or Heal Alcoholism

God helps us heal our addictions and prevent them in the first place by giving us a guide for life. Its called the Bible, and it provides the perfect example of how we should live, act, think, and feel. When we follow Gods will for our lives, we take comfort in the fact that we are loved, we are connected to God, and we belong. When we turn away from God and try to replace Him with other things, we get caught up with poor decision making, conflict with loved ones, and turning to things like alcohol to try to feel better.

In order to heal an addiction, it is important to focus on the three spheres of ones life: spirit, mind, and body. Trusting in God and following His guidance means we will be healthier spiritually. When the Holy Spirit is on the throne of our heart, we experience Gods power, guidance, and knowledge of forgiveness, peace, and hope. This affects us emotionally, because when we let go and allow God to rule our hearts, we experience reduced stress, less anguish, and greater peace. Finally, listening to what God tells us in the Bible increases our strength, our determination, and our overall physical health.
