How Intermittent Fasting Can Help With Food Addiction

Addicted To Pasta | FULL EPISODE | Freaky Eaters

Food addiction is hard to beat, especially for women, because they are more prone to food. Comprehend what is an addiction and what makes food addicting could help you get over it. Plus, intermittent fasting is a very good diet to deal with the food addiction struggle, here is why.

Certain foods are addictive, especially for women. Giving up your favourite foods can be a test for anyone looking to go on a diet.

Actually Visualize What Your Spending

One thing you can do to motivate yourself to quit is to actually look at what youre spending. Track what you spent on food delivery apps over the past 90 days and add up the total. You may be shocked by the numbers you see.

For example, Uber Eats charges a flat rate fee which is usually under $5. However, sometimes they tack on a busy fee during high volume times. Postmates, on the other hand, charges a $5.99 delivery fee for orders under $20. These noticeable fees add up each time you place an order.

Once you add up what youre spending, you can actually see what your food delivery addiction is costing you. Then, think about your annual salary or hourly rate at work and compare it to your food delivery purchases. How many hours did you have to work just to be able to afford all that takeout? What else could you have done with the money instead?

How Do You Get Rid Of Food Addiction

Similar to how food manufacturers optimise their products to target the bliss point and maximise their dopamine hit, we have used data from our challenges to reverse engineer satiety. This has allowed us to identify foods and meals that will help you get all the nutrients you need to manage your cravings, regain control of your appetite, and thrive.

Rather than feeling like a victim who has no self-control, its ideal to start by nourishing yourself and giving your body what it needs. As you provide your body with more nutrient-dense higher satiety foods and meals, you may lose interest in the siren call of the ultra-processed foods that you used to feel addicted to.

This is something that you do instead of your bad eating habit. You see, you cant stop one habit easily without replacing it with another one. For example, if you like to have something sweet to eat after dinner, try replacing dessert or chocolate with a flavoured herbal tea. If you get bored during a certain point in the day instead of reaching for an office fundraiser or buying a blueberry muffin, why not plan the next weeks worth of meals and exercise sessions. Emotional Eating And Ads

    Stop Junk Food Addiction!

Moreover, emotional eating has been conditioned by our TV viewing habits, particularly by ads.

That is, advertising has been instrumental in the positive association we develop with highly palatable but unhealthy foods. Such chronic exposure certainly shapes our thinking.

As a result, many of us adopt the expected behaviour portrayed in these ads.

Whatever the reason you emotionally eat, the end result is often the same. The solution is always only temporary and at the end of it all, you will only add on another emotion, and that is guilt over what and how much you have eaten. This could end up throwing you into a vicious cycle that gets endlessly repeated, potentially harming your health and causing weight gain.

    Practice Mindful And Intuitive Eating

Becoming aware of the thoughts and feelings we have is half the battle of shifting to a more beneficial mindset.

Consciousness or awareness is a powerful tool, simply put its the act of being conscious of something or an action.

With less and less time to take a moment to check-in with ourselves and how we are feeling, developing mindful practices will help us understand when we are feeling satisfied and connect with our internal hunger cues to prevent over eating.

Eating consciously means adopting more mindful or intuitive practices in your life and getting curious about how you feel when you are craving a particular food.

Research suggests that mindful and intuitive eating may help you learn to trust your body by slowing down and checking in with yourself, your environment, and your food .

Building conscious awareness around your relationship with food also means checking in with other areas that affect your wellness.

This is one of the reasons mindful eating and intuitive eating practices are being used as tools in eating disorder recovery, as they help increase self-awareness .

How Many People Have Food Addiction

A recent systematic review examined the total prevalence of food addiction in people all over the world8Pursey K, Stanwell P, Gearhardt A, et al. The prevalence of food addiction as assessed by the Yale Food Addiction Scale: a systematic review. Nutrients. 2014 6:4552-4590.. Some interesting findings from this review emerged:

    • The global prevalence of food addiction is 19.9%.
    • Females had higher rates of food addiction than males .
    • Overweight/obese people had higher rates of food addiction than normal weight people .
    • People with an eating disorder had much higher rates of food addiction than people without an eating disorder .

Some people think that food addiction is just another term for binge-eating disorder.

The evidence does not support this, because more than 40% of people with binge-eating disorder do not receive a diagnosis of food addiction9Linardon J, Messer M. Assessment of food addiction using the Yale Food Addiction Scale 2.0 in individuals with binge-eating disorder symptomatology: Factor structure, psychometric properties, and clinical significance. Psychiatry Research. 2019..

This suggests that the food addiction construct is not entirely overlapping binge-eating disorder.

    The Anatomy Of An Addiction

What makes something an addiction, rather than something you just like?

An addiction is something you keep doing even though it has destructive effects on you. The habit has tied into your brains reward mechanism, through positive reinforcement, so that you feel the need to keep doing the habit even when you know you should stop.

An example might be someone who smokes even though its making him sick, or someone who shops even when shes deeply in debt. Food addictions are common, ranging from a minor addiction to coffee to a major addiction that might cause obesity, diabetes, heart disease and more.

How do we get addicted to food? It starts out simply you might eat something because its tasty and makes you feel good. And then when you are feeling down or stressed out perhaps, you turn to the food to feel better . Next time the bad feeling comes up, you do it again, because last time you did feel better after eating the food. Through repetition, each time you get the bad feeling, you start to get a strong urge to eat the food so strong, you cant resist, even if youre on a diet.

This can happen with a bunch of negative feelings stress, loneliness, boredom, sadness, anger, mourning a loss, the discomfort of travel, the discomfort of awkward social situations, and so on. Each of these might be tied to one type of food, or several.

What Is The Most Common Food Addiction

Getting a dopamine hit from food is good we should enjoy the food that nourishes us! Our analysis has shown that we have cravings for not just carbs and fat, but also protein and other nutrients. Our problem today is that we need to consume a lot more energy to get the nutrients we require to thrive.

Experiments back in 1990 demonstrated that rats experienced hyperphagia when exposed to energy-dense foods that combined a similar amount of energy from fat and carbs.

Our satiety analysis also shows a similar trend we tend to eat significantly more when our food matches the autumnal fat+carb combo profile.

A 2018 paper in Cell Metabolism showed that we experience a supra-additive dopamine hit from foods that mix fat and carbs. On a calorie-for-calorie basis, we are also willing to part with more money for these foods. From an evolutionary biology perspective, this makes sense because of how valuable these foods have been for survival. They make it easy to consume a lot of energy quickly!

In evolutionary times, energy was hard to come by. Thus, energy-dense foods that quickly fill ourfat and carb fuel tanks were rare and highly valued. To reinforce this, these foods elicit their world-renowned double-dopamine hit to ensure a special place in our hearts forever. If they are available, we stay true to our DNA and eat them. And once you start, you probably wont stop until theyre all gone!
