Using Ibogaine To Treat Addiction

Some researchers are working with the federal government to turn non-psychedelic analogs of psychedelics like ibogaine into safe medicines capable of treating substance use disorder.

A Massachusetts-based startup, for example, is currently working with the U.S. National Institute on Drug Abuse to test a patented version of ibogaine as a potential addiction treatment.

How Does Ibogaine Treat Opioid Addiction

Historically, ibogaine has been used by members of the Bwiti religion during initiatory ceremonies.3 In America, however, Ibogaine is a Schedule 1 substance and has no accepted medical use.4 The FDA has not approved it for treating any substance use disorder and more research needs to be done to confirm its safety and efficacy.

Howard Lotsoff is credited with being the first person to use ibogaine to treat his own heroin addiction.5 In 1986, he received a patent for the capsule form of ibogaine and proceeded to work with European medical experts to develop a treatment for opioid and cocaine addiction. Although the research and tests were promising, clinical trials were stopped due to funding issues and the death of a patient who was treated with ibogaine.

Today, ibogaine is illegal in the U.S. but some international treatment centers offer ibogaine treatment for addiction. Since opioid and heroin withdrawal can be a lengthy and uncomfortable process, individuals may seek out these international treatment providers in hopes of overcoming their addiction without having to endure the pain of withdrawal or the irresistible drug cravings afterward. Unfortunately, many of these ibogaine treatment providers do not have sufficient medical training to properly care for people and clients may be at risk for serious medical complications or even death.

Factors Affecting The Results Of Ibogaine Treatment

Psychedelic Salvation: Could Ibogaine be the cure for drug addiction?

Yes, certain factors will greatly affect the results you get after your session at an ibogaine treatment or rehabilitation center or the results you will get when you self-medicate in your house in the company of a professional healthcare giver.

How Successful Ibogaine Treatment Is, Relies On Many Factors:

  • How long youve been using drugs
  • How much ibogaine do you take
  • Whether or not you take ibogaine in a clinic setting and under medical supervision.
  • The presence of other drugs in your system at the time

The Presence Of Other Drugs In Your System

Im glad you asked! Well get to the answer in a second, but first, lets take a step back and discuss how ibogaine is metabolized.

Ibogaine is metabolized by the liver, which means that if you have other drugs in your system that also need to be broken down by your liver , these substances will compete for the same enzymes and resources needed for ibogaine metabolism.

This can slow down or even stop an ibogaine treatment from working properly.

While its possible to take ibogaine treatments with opiates already in your body, there are some ways to minimize this risk of interference:

  • Avoid taking any other drugs before taking an ibogaine treatmentespecially if theyre stimulants like speed or cocaine
  • Work closely with your doctor/rehab center so they can help manage any underlying medical conditions

Side Effects Of Ibogaine

After having ibogaine therapy, you might experience visual and auditory hallucinations and a loss of control over bodily movements for approximately 3 to 5 hours. During these hallucination stages you may also re-experience past traumasa symptom that is actually considered to be an important part of ibogaine use .

Testimonials from people include how ibogaine has the ability to help resolve deep underlying issues that may ultimately be driving addiction. You may also experience:4

  • Rise in blood pressure.

Before taking ibogaine therapy, you should first have a full medical screening to prevent or reduce the chances of any complications. Some serious heart conditions may occur such as cardiac arrhythmias,8 as well as liver and kidney conditions. These along with certain mental health conditions might make ibogaine highly risky and a less than ideal therapy for you.5

From 1990 to 2008 there were 19 deaths associated with ibogaine therapy.5 That is roughly one per year. In comparison, Methadonea common method of treating opioid addictionaccounted for nearly 40% of single-drug opioid pain reliever deaths in 2009 alone. This is twice as much as any other opioid in that same year.6

Models Of Anxiety Depression And Addiction

Unlike ibogaine, the new molecule is water-soluble and can be synthesized in a single step. Experiments with cell cultures and zebrafish show that it is less toxic than ibogaine, which can cause heart attacks and has been responsible for several deaths.

TBG increased formation of new dendrites in rat nerve cells, and of new spines on those dendrites. Thats similar to the effect of drugs like ketamine, LSD, MDMA and DMT on connections between nerve cells.

TBG did not, however, cause a head twitch response in mice, which is known to correlate with hallucinations in humans.

A series of experiments in rodent models of depression and addiction show that the new drug has promising positive effects. These animal models conducted in accordance with NIH regulations and reviewed and approved by Institutional Animal Care and Use Committees remain vital to investigating complex psychiatric disorders.

Mice trained to drink alcohol cut back their consumption after a single dose of TBG. Rats were trained to associate a light and tone with pressing a lever to get a dose of heroin. When the opiate is taken away, the rats develop signs of withdrawal and press the lever again when given the light and sound cues. Treating the rats with TBG had a long-lasting effect on opiate relapse.

Olson thinks that TBG works by changing the structure of neurons in key brain circuits involved in depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder and addiction.

How Does Ibogaine Work

Ibogaine has been used in Africa as medicine for centuries. However, it was not until the 1990s that the National Institute on Drug Abuse began funding studies on its safety, effects on the users health, and therapeutic impact. While they terminated their studies on Ibogaine therapy in 1995, others continued examining the use of the drug, determining that it did have legitimate therapeutic applications in assisting with addiction management.

However, research on Ibogaine treatment is minimal. New and old Clinical observations indicate that it is effective and safe at alleviating withdrawal symptoms when stopping the use of opioid medications and cocaine. But clinical observations are not the gold standard of research, and there is much more that needs to be done to affirm that those experiences are universal.

Just as the drugs effectiveness is not well documented, it is unclear exactly how Iboga for addiction treatmentor other applicationsworks.

Some claim that it is an opioid antagonist, but this does not account for all its effects on the body. Some clinics advocating for addiction treatment with the drug even claim that it rewires the addiction zone of the brain.

Ultimately, claims that it does work are mostly just observational or anecdotal, and how it works is still not well understood.

Is Ibogaine A Safe Treatment For Drug Addiction

Substance Addiction can be described as a chronic condition due to a result of long-term changes caused by drugs to the reward centers of the brain. When people take Ibogaine, it then becomes converted into a compound called, Noribogaine.

The newly transformed substance targets the area of the brain that is affected by the drugs addictive behaviors. This works by retuning these areas and allows the brain to restructure itself to its pre-addiction state.

Though Ibogaine can prevent drug cravings and reduce withdrawal symptoms, the ibogaine treatment process for drug addiction is more like a final way to stop addiction.

Ibogaine in the body converted to Noribogaine acts as a stimulant when taken in small doses. In large doses, it puts a person into a psychedelic state.

Mood And Craving Measures

The depressive symptoms were measured using the Beck Depression Inventory version II , Profile of Moods and Symptoms Checklist-90 scales . Subjects scores from the Beck Depression Inventory, POMS, SCL-90 and the HCQ-29 and CCQ-45 craving subscales were analyzed by primary drug of abuse across treatment phase . A repeated measures mixed model analysis of variance with time post-treatment on Days 5 and Day 30 was performed with days as a repeated measure on subject with the change from baseline score as the dependent variable. A compound symmetric covariance model was used to control for the correlation between the two repeated measures . Patients with incomplete data were included in the analyses, after assessment of the data to determine whether missing data were informative or not. Missing data by excluding patients with incomplete data or imputing data was examined and ruled out as potentially producing biased results by comparing the mean change from baseline for post treatment discharge and 30 day follow up assessments. For all analyses, the criterion for significance was p 0.05, two-tailed.

The demographic characteristics of the opioid and cocaine dependent subjects are shown Tables 1, 2. The opioid and cocaine subjects did not differ significantly in the majority of the socio-demographic and clinical measures of addiction severity investigated at the baseline . The average age of the opioid abusers was 35.8 ± 9.9 years. The subjects were habitual users with at least 5.5 ± 7.2 prior treatment admissions for their opioid dependence and 19.2 ± 13.0 days of use in the past month before treatment. Lifetime use was 11.2 ± 8.6 years. Most of the subjects were Caucasian and male in this study. There was a high rate of depressive disorders reported with 52.9% meeting clinical criteria for major depressive disorder or depression NOS in agreement with prior reports .

TABLE 2. Demographic characteristics of cocaine dependent subjects.

Thus, this observational case series included mostly male opioid and cocaine dependent subjects that were admitted for ibogaine treatment. Based on the limitation of the sample size and the open label study design, we did not attempt to test for gender differences in safety, pharmacokinetics or efficacy measures.

Patient Reviews & Ibogaine Treatment Experiences

This program saved my daughters life. Without the wonderful work and dedication of Dr. Alberto Sola, our story would have ended differently. My daughter was addicted to opiates. We tried everything to get her the help she needed. Too many treatment centers to remember, too much money spent and too many tears and heartaches to even discuss. We tried methadone, suboxone, we tried tough love, we tried involuntary detox, we tried unconditional love and patience, and all of it failed. Ibogaine treatment at Clear Sky Recovery gave us back our daughter. From the bottom of my soul, thank you Dr. Sola, Marcela, Jenni and all the staff at this amazing place which transformed my daughter.

I wanted to tell everybody involved with making this possible THANK YOU! I am now suboxone free with absolutely zero withdrawals. Ibogaine was a life changing event for me that has totally changed my way of thinking! I had a lot of things that I did in the past that I couldnt keep hiding away, it only brought me down. I am now full of life and want to live to the very best of my ability. One month ago I would just as soon be dead, I did not have the ability to have feelings or show love. I was just an empty body walking around. I have now put the past behind me and I am ready to live the rest of my life. My wife is so happy to have me back, I look forward to getting up in the morning! I was able to bury my demons and kick them down.

Facing The Root Cause Of Our Addictions

Many people who are battling addiction are dealing with deep rooted psychological and emotional problems or traumas cloaking pain by using substances. For this reason, it can be difficult to find a long-term solution for addiction without addressing the root cause for using the drugs in the first place.

Rao said: The pharmacology of ibogaine is incredibly complicated, and it is not obvious at this moment what is driving its effects. The extract clearly has an impact on neuroplasticity like psilocybin, though the psychedelic effect that it creates is subjectively very different to what you get with psilocybin. It is a lot more dreamlike and protracted and can last over 20 hours in some individuals.

The psychedelic experience that is often described is that the drug takes you through all of the bad decisions you have made in your life in a chronological order and makes you confront them. Ibogaine is not generally thought of as a drug of abuse as most people dont have a great experience overall but one hypothesis for why ibogaine has such profound, long-lasting effects is that by making you confront and process previous traumas, you obviate the need to abuse opioids as you are no longer trying to placate some underlying pain.
