Often times, addiction is associated with idolatry because the addict is putting the drug first and foremost in their lives, instead of God. The inability to shake the drug off by themselves can make addicts feel weak. When they are offered help, they feel so guilty about the terrible things they have done that they do not feel they deserve a chance at a new life. They think they are failures and cannot live up to God’s standards, so what is the point of even trying?

Our Philosophy Of Addiction Shapes Our Treatment Of It Whether We Realize It Or Not

Its not exactly a sympathetic picture. But I suspect it underlies much of our thinking about addiction. Consider the popular idea that someone with addiction has to hit rock bottom before she can begin true recovery. In the Socratic view, this makes perfect sense. If addiction is due to a failure to appreciate the bad consequences of getting high, then the best route to recovery might be for the person to experience firsthand how bad those consequences really are. A straight dose of the harshest reality might be the only cure for the addicts self-deceived beliefs and shortsighted preferences.

We could give a similar Socratic rationale for punishing drug possession with decades in jail: If we make the consequences of using bad enough, people with addiction will finally realize that its better to be sober, the thought goes. Once again, we are correcting their flawed judgment and priorities, albeit with a heavy hand.

Socratess view also makes sense of our reluctance to adopt medication-assisted treatment and needle exchange programs. These methods might temporarily mitigate the damage caused by addiction, but on the Socratic view, they leave the underlying problem untouched.

Often times I go to the Bible for faith and inspiration. I can often draw inspiration and guidance to help me through our day to day life. There are often scripture listings I can go to help read about certain difficulties I face. But how does Jesus Heal Drug Addiction?

One of the most powerful things I was taught through reading the Bible that Jesus has the ability to heal the sick. Some of the amazing stories in the bible are of Jesus doing these good works. I saw that Jesus helps a crippled man walk, I heard of Lepers being healed, I heard of sight of the blind being restored. These stories in the bible are powerful and uplifting. I often thought about how wonderful all these things are but fail to see that healing power of Jesus is here for all of us.

Drug Addiction is often crippling, it corrodes your ability to live and function without your substance of choice. It is a sickness and disease that takes over your whole life. It can destroy lives and demolish families. I do want to also tell you this, Jesus can heal the disease of drug addiction. Here is what that bible tells us:

I Will Always Love You

While all Christians want to stay as far away from sin as they can, there is no doubt that we are going to make mistakes. We are going to make a lot of mistakes, in fact.
